DSC is mandatory for company registration, GST filing, ITR filing, and all government portal submissions. This guide explains Class 3 DSC, the application process, and validity.

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a handwritten signature. It is a secure digital key issued by a government-approved Certifying Authority (CA) that authenticates the identity of the holder for electronic transactions. In India, DSC is mandatory for a wide range of government filings.

Why is DSC Required?

DSC ensures the authenticity and integrity of electronic documents. When you sign a document with your DSC, it proves that the document was signed by you and has not been tampered with after signing. This is legally equivalent to a physical signature under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Where is DSC Mandatory?

• MCA portal: Company/LLP registration, annual filings (AOC-4, MGT-7) • Income Tax portal: ITR filing for companies, LLPs, and tax audit reports • GST portal: GST registration and filing for companies • DGFT portal: IEC registration and export/import filings • Tender portals: Government e-procurement (GeM, CPPP) • EPFO portal: PF-related filings for employers

Types of DSC

• Class 3 DSC (Individual): For directors, partners, and individuals filing on government portals • Class 3 DSC (Organization): For companies and organizations • DGFT DSC: Specifically for DGFT portal filings (IEC, export/import) Note: Class 1 and Class 2 DSCs have been discontinued since January 2021.

The DSC Application Process

1. Submit application to a Certifying Authority (CA) like eMudhra, Sify, or NSDL 2. Identity verification via Aadhaar OTP (paperless) or video verification 3. Payment of DSC fees 4. DSC issued on a USB token (hardware device) within 1–2 working days 5. Install driver software and register DSC on required portals

DSC Validity and Renewal

DSC is typically issued for 2 years. After expiry, it must be renewed. The same USB token can be used for renewal. We recommend renewing 30 days before expiry to avoid disruption to your filings.

Important: Safeguard Your DSC Token

Your DSC token is like your physical signature — keep it secure. Never share your token or PIN with anyone. If lost or stolen, immediately contact the Certifying Authority to revoke the DSC.
