Import Export Code (IEC) is mandatory for any business involved in international trade. Here's everything you need to know about applying, documents needed, and timelines.

Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce. It is mandatory for any business or individual engaged in import or export of goods and services from India.

Who Needs IEC?

• Any business importing goods into India • Any business exporting goods from India • Service exporters claiming benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy • Individuals importing/exporting goods for commercial purposes

IEC is NOT Required For:

• Imports/exports for personal use (not for trade) • Government ministries and departments • Imports/exports of specific goods notified by DGFT

Documents Required for IEC Registration

• PAN card of the business/individual • Aadhaar card / Voter ID / Passport of the proprietor/director • Cancelled cheque or bank certificate • Address proof of the business premises • Digital photograph of the applicant

The Application Process

IEC applications are submitted online through the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in). The process is entirely digital and typically takes 2–3 working days after successful submission.

IEC Validity

IEC has lifetime validity — once issued, it does not need to be renewed. However, it must be updated annually on the DGFT portal (even if there are no changes) to keep it active.

Benefits of IEC

• Enables legal import and export of goods • Required for customs clearance • Allows businesses to avail export incentives and schemes like MEIS, SEIS, RoDTEP • Enables remittance of foreign currency through banks • Required for opening a current account for export proceeds

Before applying for IEC, ensure your business is properly registered. If you are a small exporter, MSME Registration can unlock additional export incentives and government schemes.
